About Dorrit Matson

Dorrit Matson established New York City’s New York Scandia Symphony in 1988, and continues to lead all educational and musical activities as the organization’s music director. During the past 30 years she has organized and led concert programs at numerous New York City venues and festivals, including the Under Northern Lights concert events. She is also responsible for creating program content and researching the works of various Scandinavian composers. Dorrit Matson has received several professional honors as a conductor and performer, ranging from an Italian State Scholarship to the Grethe Kolbe’s Legat, an award from the Danish Conductors Association.

Dorrit Matson holds a master of arts in instrumental conducting from the University of Miami, as well as a master of arts in musicology from the University of Copenhagen. She received her performance degree in chorus and orchestral conducting from the Royal Danish Academy of Music. She has used her academic foundation in music not only to conduct symphonic performances, but to also facilitate the release of four live recordings of Northern European music rarely heard in the United States. Her CDs are released on Centaur Records and are often heard on local as well as national radio stations.
